Sarasota Florida Fishing Report By Capt. Bob Smith

This past week was good on the bay! Whale Key shoal and Helicopter shoal just outside of Buttonwood Harbor has produced plenty of nice size spotted sea trout to 24" and bluefish to up three pounds. Bluefish, jacks and ladyfish blew up on the large schools of very small baitfish, causing the water to boil and the numerous birds to attack from above.

Last Florida Keys Tarpon Report
June 20, - 27, 2008

Greetings from Tarpon World:

My 98 year old Mom and I are heading home to North Carolina tomorrow morning, My truck is packed, and the skiff is cleaned and has the cover tied down to the trailer ready for travel. This was a good Tarpon season weather wise although we has lots of wind and clouds I fished 66 out of 75 days which were booked. Seems that we did pretty good as most of my clients have already begun booking dates for next years Tarpon Season.

7-1-08 - HUGE CHANGE!

Had Dan Kelly and his two sons out for a day of pulling on big fish. So I hoped.

But like a 6th sense, I just had a funny feeling this morning. It was cooler, which is always welcomed. But just felt different than, last Thursday. If you aren't sweating hard at 8am in the heat, it's just not a typical late June day on the water. Greenies at the rocks, were the usual hunt and peck, to catch them.

Fishing Report 07/01/2008 – Capt. Terry Frankford

Angler's aboard the Reelin and Chillin have been catching, trout, redfish, mangrove snapper, pompano, permit, and bluefish, to name a few more popular species.

When I have the time to cover many of my favorite locations, sooner or later one or more of these will produce. This proved true with four angler's out on a full day trip. We would hit a spot, fish for a few minutes, if we had action we would stay - if not we would move on. All angler's managed a respectable catch, Andria started off with a nice trout around eighteen inches caught just at the north end of Quick Pt. where the flats met with the channel.

It’s been nice to have a few mornings without the wind blowing so hard. All spring has been characterized by high winds that tend to make the fishing tough. Well, this week was much better and made for enjoyable days on the water.

Rip Tide plastic baits have produce well this week on a variety of fish. Trout, jacks, and bluefish all ate them well. My overall favorite remains the 3 inch Rip Tide Mullet, but the Flats Chub and the Curtailer have also produced fish.

The summer doldrums held fast this past week on the east central coast of Florida with hot calm days providing for some assumes sight fishing conditions. Although the fishing conditions were magnificent, the catching wasn't great. We did manage some assume fish, but it feels like a bit of cold water (Labrador Current) may be starting to push in. The bait this week was in very close to the beach making it tough to catch, and the inshore kingfish were few and far between. "

Another holiday weekend is upon us. This is the big one for the summer and we can expect quite a few visitors down not only for the festivities but also for the fishing. It is fantastic weather for them as well as you. If you have been fishing lately, you know what I mean.

The dolphin offshore have been plentiful. The hottest areas have been around 12 miles from the reef. This has been good for days and days with plenty of large school dolphin in the 5 to 9 pound range. There have been scattering of big fish as well. Wahoo have been running fairly well along the 300-foot range for those with fast trolled lures.

Lower Keys Fishing Report

Winds were up this past week and it made for happy fish. The seas were a little lumpy but there were plenty of places to hide from the wind and have a good day. Our little part of the word offers fantastic fishing possibilities no matter the winds. There are good choices no matter the direction and intensity of the wind.

We spent two days in the gulf hiding from strong SE winds. We found big sharks more than eager to eat our bonito sides. Shark fishing is a blast when you use the appropriate tackle. I like to keep a few spinning outfits loaded with braid. I keep one thirty pound outfit with a short leader and a small piece of bait at the ready for smaller sharks.

July brings hot weather, afternoon rains and Fourth of July parties. Oh....and lots of great fishing out there, too! Mornings on the river will bring action at first light on top water lures for snook or trout on the flats. They will seek deeper water as the sun rises. I will be fishing along the mangroves for snook with jigs, twitch baits and spoons where the water will be 2-3 feet deep. Trout will move to deeper flats in 2-6 feet of water and will most likely hit pinfish, pigfish or live shrimp.

INSHORE - The catch and release snook action has been good just before daylight around the lighted docks along Indian River Drive. We had several fish over the slot. Try free lining a live bait like a pinfish or a pigfish. The trout fishing has also been good at first light and just before dark. The bigger fish are taking live mullet fished in 4 to 6 feet of water just off the edges of the flats. Try the area around Big Mud Creek. I am still getting reports of good catches of snapper along the channel edges and in the Ft. Pierce Inlet and a live shrimp has been the way to go. And, if you are looking for some fun just take a small silver spoon and find the schools of spanish mackerel and bonita that are coming in the Inlet.

Hard work in Tampa Bay pays off!

Hard work definitely pays off, and that is a good thing because the weather hasn’t been the best over the past couple of weeks. It’s summertime in Florida, which is also known to us natives as the rainy season. We’ve put a lot of hard work into running from the rain, but it was well worth the running because the fishing before and after storms has been very good. If you’re out on the water in the summertime in Florida, you better pack your foul weather gear because you can bet that you’ll see rain showers before the day is up. It can be a real nuisance sometimes, but look at it this way…at least it cools you down a little.

Weather is still a big factor but fishing has been good. Lot’s of tarpon and some big ones. The tarpon are plentiful and cooperating when the winds let us locate em. Crabs are still hard to find but we have been successful thanks to local knowledge. It helps to live here and know the fishermen and crabbers. Threadfins are abundant and the Sabiki rigs are your best bet. Sometimes they are thick enough to cast net but it’s challenging.

It was a vacation week for me, but I did run one trip with Harry Krukenberg and his daughter Allison, from the great state of Ohio. I first fished with Harry and Aly last summer, along with his Dad Herman. They were great folks, and I wouldn't have passed up a chance to fish with Harry and Aly again. I was disappointed to hear that Harry wasn't able to make it for this trip.

Our trip was on Wednesday, and I had been off to weddings in Georgia, and such, and not on the water in almost two weeks. There were only a handful of guides at the ramp, and they all told me there was no bait to be had save for some big threadfins under the bridge or tiny little new hatch shiners that aren't big enough to toss. Not what I wanted to hear!

Thursday I tried to get out early in the morning with my fishing buddy Keli Emery, but we had to wait out some steady rain. We finally donned rain gear and headed into Little Cockroach Bay with some frozen threadfin herring. This is redfish candy, frozen or fresh, but the trick to using frozen bait is to keep it on ice and cut it up one bait at a time.

We rigged the chunked bait on half-ounce Rip

Southeast Florida Fishing Report

Captain Dean Panos

May 27th, 2008 Southeast Florida Fishing Report

In the last report, I mentioned that we would be heading to the Bahamas for a few trips and we went to Bimini twice. We didn’t have absolutely banner trips, but we did catch fish and we had great people on board both times. The fishing on the first trip was a little bit slow. We should have trolled all day because the guys that went trolling instead of bottom fishing came back with some impressive catches of big dolphin (up to 68 pounds) as well as some blue marlin releases. Our second trip we went to one of my honey holes and found some incredibly big yellowtail snappers. These snappers were all of 3 to 5 pounds and would pull drag on 20 pound outfits.

We also did well with the cero mackerels. We tried for the muttons up front of Bimini but didn’t stay at it for a long time. All in all though, good people, good weather and being in the Bahamas made it all worthwhile. I am heading back to the Bahamas in a few weeks and will be there for the better part of June. I still have some opening for June and plenty of openings in July and August, so if you want to experience some island fishing and island time, let me know so we can set it up.

On this side, the fishing is actually very good. There are still a lot of sailfish around and we have had a steady kingfish bite every morning and late afternoon. Our best day sailfishing we caught 8 out of 12 sails. I had a good customer on board that has fished we me a lot, and he even commented on this being our best sailfish trip and it’ s not really prime sailfish season either. Also there have been quite a few blackfin tunas around, especially in the late afternoon. One of my friends caught 14 blackfins in one afternoon, and I heard of a few others with 8 and 10 blackfins per day, so we are really seeing a big push of these fish move into our area.

There have not been a lot of dolphin reports. I think with fuel approaching $5.00 a gallon at the marinas, many are not running out into the Gulfstream looking for them. On both our crossing to the Bahamas, we didn’t see much debris or bird activity in the Stream, and the debris we did find, only held tripletails on it. No doubt though, the dolphin will show up and as soon as they do, many will hed out in search of them.

I did do one nighttime swordfish trip and we had no luck. We had a perfect drift with good baits, but never had a bite all night. I did hear that the daytime sword bite has picked up so I am rigged and ready, so give me a call.

That’s it for now, get out there and make some memories and catch them up.

Louisiana State Record Grouper !

Louisiana State Record Groupermedical student lands 359-lb grouper

THIBODAUX , La. --A medical student who blindfolds his friends to keep his favorite offshore fishing spot secret has come up with a record-beating fish -- a warsaw grouper weighing 359.1 pounds. The giant hauled in by J.J. Tabor of Thibodaux is 12 ounces above the previous Louisiana state record, a state biologist confirmed.

It's been cut down to fillets. The first fillet weighed 53 pounds, Tabor said. He caught it near an oil rig 70 miles south of Fourchon, in 400 feet of water. He won't give a more specific description.

'It's J.J.'s secret,' said Joey Rodrigue, a friend from Baton Rouge who joined Tabor and Tabor's father, John, on the record-making trip Saturday. 'I don't even know where I was. He blindfolds us on the way out.' Tabor said he thought at first that his hook with a live hardtail on it had it the bottom 'until I felt the big head shake.'

Rodrigue steered away from the rig. 'I put myself in a harness and just had to lay back and fight,' J.J. Tabor said. 'It was about a 15 or 20 minute fight.'

Tabor cleaned the fish late Monday afternoon outside his father's auto repair shop in Thibodaux. 'We'll split it up,' he said. 'I'll make some phone calls and try to get rid of it fresh. The rest, we'll vacuum pack it and cook it later.' Tabor says he believes the fish is about 33 years old. He plans to send an inner-ear bone called the otolith to a university in Florida where researchers can help determine the age of the fish. He hopes to get the results in about four weeks.

The world record, caught off Florida in 1985, is 436 pounds, 12 ounces.

HOTTEST SAILFISH BITE OF THE SEASON!

2008 ABC/WORLD DIAMOND SOURCE BILLFISH CHALLENGE SETS
NEW RECORD

Total # of Boats – 71 Total
# of Releases – 260

The Sailfish bite in the last
3 years of the ABC/World Diamond Source Billfish Challenge presented by D&D
Welding has been nothing short of astounding.
This past Saturday, February 23rd, the tournament set a new
record as 71 teams posted a total of 260 releases by day’s end.

Whether it’s good timing, the
right weekend, a little bit of luck or a combination of all three, hot
Sailfishing action seems to be the norm in the Billfish Challenge, rather than
the exception. In only three days of
fishing, the tournament boasts a unique one-day format, teams have combined to
release a staggering tally of 694 Sailfish over the past three years. “Evidently the word has spread about our
tournament,” said Jamie Bunn, director of the event. “We were in the company of some of the best
Sailfish teams in the sport and once again the bite was something that our
teams will talk about for a long time to come.”

Within minutes of the 7am
lines in the water announcement, the releases began to pour in to the
tournament radio room. Doubles, triples,
quads, some teams even had 6 fish on at a time.
It was absolute pandemonium on the water. While the fishing appeared to be good up and
down the coastline, the hottest action was in the vicinity of Haulover
Inlet. In the center of it all was the
Miss Costa team, captained by Ray Rosher and his crew - Bill Danko, Rick
Murphy, Alex Castellanos and Charmain Rosher.

By late morning, Rosher’s
team had capitalized on 9 releases and were sitting in 1st
place. However, the leader board was
extremely tight – 4 Aces and Weez in the Keys had also pulled even with Miss
Costa at 9 releases a piece, and several other teams were knocking on the door
with 7 and eight releases as well. By
midday, Rosher elected to pick up and run to the south of the field and
followed the edge they had been fishing all the way into around 80 feet of
water. That proved to be a wise
decision. As quickly as they began
deploying baits, the Sailfish were devouring them behind their boat. “We literally could not even get out a
complete spread,” said Rosher. Within 30
minutes, Rosher’s team had added another 6 releases and secured their 1st
place position with a final tally of 16 releases in the one-day tournament,
earning them nearly $75,000 in prize money.

Second through 5th
place in the tournament were all decided by time. Each team had 10 releases a piece. Captain Joe Turner and his 4 Aces team finished in second earning
$41,100 in prize money, followed by Rock
Star in 3rd, Priceless
in 4th and Weez in the Keys
in 5th. In the funfish
division, Brian Rifkin and his teammates on In
the Box The
tournament paid back over $170,000 in prize money, also a new tournament
record. earned an extra $9,200 for the heaviest funfish weighed in the
tournament – a 43.1 pound Kingfish.

1st Place – Miss Costa – 3200 points - $74,800

2nd Place – 4 Aces – 2000 points – $41,100

3rd Place – Rock Star – 2000 points - $12,640

4th Place – Priceless – 2000 points - $1,250

5th Place – Weez in the Keys – 2000 points - $20,000

The Top Amature team award went to Even Flow by landing 5 sailfish for a total of 1,000 points. Florida Sport Fishings very own Eric Porak reported that they had their first sailfish on after having the baits out for 6 minutes, and were cut off several times by kings as they were only targeting sails.

Team Even Flow consisted of,

Captain - Kevin Crousillat

- Eric Porak

- Brett Porak

- Jim Steel

- Brian Zascavage

- Darrin Penharlow
